How to choose a cleaner you can trust with your Costa del Sol home
A good cleaner keeps your home tidy. A great one protects your investment, prepares it for guests and tells you when something is wrong. Here is how to tell the difference.

Finding a cleaner on the Costa del Sol is easy. Finding the right one is not. Many owners discover the difference the hard way: a home that looks tidy but has a leaking tap nobody mentioned, guests arriving to a fridge that was never checked, or a set of keys held by someone they barely know.
A quality cleaner is not just someone who cleans. For a second home or rental, the person you let in is also your eyes, your first line of defence, and often the only person who stands inside your property for weeks at a time. Choosing well matters more here than almost anywhere else.
Why it is harder in Spain than you expect
The coast runs on seasonal work. Cleaners come and go, availability shifts with the tourist season, and the person who was excellent in May may be fully booked by August. Language can be a barrier when something needs explaining precisely. And there is a big gap between someone who cleans a lived-in home and someone who prepares a property for paying guests.
- ·High turnover of workers during peak season, exactly when you need reliability most
- ·Many cleaners clean only — they will not report a damp patch, a tripped breaker or a missing item
- ·Communication often stops at 'done', with no photos, no checklist and no record
- ·Last-minute cancellations are common, and a missed turnover means a refunded guest
Cleaning versus guest-ready
A guest-ready turnover is a different job. The property must look untouched, not just clean: beds made to hotel standard, towels folded, water spots removed from glass, terrace furniture straightened, welcome details in place. At the same time someone must count inventory, check appliances, and confirm the previous guests left nothing behind — and nothing missing.
That level of work only comes from someone who treats the property as their responsibility, not their next appointment.
What to look for before handing over your keys
- ·A clear checklist they follow every visit, not a vague promise of 'a good clean'
- ·Photos after every clean or check, sent to you the same day
- ·They report problems without being asked — a stain, a smell, a broken shutter
- ·References from other absent owners or rental hosts, not only from locals
- ·Consistency: the same person or small team every time, so they learn your home
- ·They notice details: how you like the beds, which products to use, what 'ready' means to you
Trust is the real service
Anyone can hold a mop. Very few people will hold your keys, open your post, notice a leak before it reaches the neighbour below, and care enough to fix the small things without an invoice for every conversation. That trust is what you are actually paying for — the cleaning is simply the most visible part of it.
This is exactly how we work: a small number of homes, each one known personally, every visit documented. See our approach to property management in Estepona, guest-ready rental turnovers and keyholding and property checks — or read why regular visits matter on this coast.
